Why Law Essays Lose Marks That Were Never About the Law
Most law students who come to us understand the material perfectly well. What costs them marks is presentation: citation errors, structural drift and analysis that never quite arrives.

OSCOLA Referencing and Legal Citation Checks
OSCOLA is footnote based and unusually unforgiving. These are the eight checks we run on every law essay, and the errors we find in almost every draft.
Footnote formatting
Footnote markers after punctuation, full stops closing each note, and correct order where several sources support one point.
Case citations
Case name italicised in the text but not the footnote, correct year brackets, court and report series.

Post 2001 judgments need the neutral citation first, followed by the best report.

Statute citations
Short title and year without a comma, correct section, subsection and paragraph format.

Pinpoint references
The specific page or paragraph you relied on. The single most common omission we correct, and the easiest mark to lose.
Shortforms and ibid
Whether ibid, above n and shortened case names are used correctly, and never before the full citation appears.
Secondary sources
Journal articles, books, edited collections, command papers and online sources, each with its own OSCOLA pattern.
Consistency and cross references
The same source cited the same way throughout, and every cross reference pointing at the right footnote after edits.
A note on bibliographies. OSCOLA does not require a bibliography for a standard essay, since the footnotes carry the citations. Where one is required, usually for a dissertation or thesis, the format differs from footnotes: authors are listed surname first and entries are grouped by source type. If your module handbook asks for a bibliography, send it with your draft and we will check it against what your department actually requires.
How Should a Law Essay Be Structured?
UK law assessments come in two shapes and they need different structures. Using the wrong one is a common reason a well researched draft scores lower than expected.
Problem questions
IRAC or CLEO- Issue. Identify the precise legal question the facts raise, not the general topic area.
- Rule. State the relevant law with authority, cited properly, and only the law that bears on the issue.
- Application. Apply the rule to these specific facts. This is where most drafts thin out and most marks are lost.
- Conclusion. Advise the party. A clear answer, even a qualified one, scores better than sitting on the fence.
CLEO follows the same logic with Claim, Law, Evaluation and Outcome, and suits questions where competing arguments need weighing.
Essay questions
Argument led- Position. State your line of argument in the introduction. Markers should know your answer before page two.
- Evidence. Build the case with authority, academic commentary and, where relevant, comparative material.
- Counterargument. Engage the strongest opposing view honestly. Ignoring it is what caps a good essay at a middling mark.
- Evaluation. Say what follows and why it matters. Critical analysis means judgement, not extra description.
If you cannot state your argument in one sentence, the essay does not have one yet. That is usually the first thing our feedback identifies.

Questions UK Law Students Ask
Is law essay help legal in the UK?
Proofreading, editing and academic feedback on your own work are legal, and most UK universities run their own writing support services offering the same thing. What is a criminal offence in England, under the Skills and Post-16 Education Act 2022, is providing, arranging or advertising a service that produces the work a student then submits. We do not offer that. Everything we do works on an essay you have already written yourself.
Do you write law essays for students?
No. We do not write essays, chapters, paragraphs or problem question answers. We only work on drafts students have already written. If you have not written anything yet, we cannot help with that assignment, although we can talk you through how to approach the question and plan your structure.
Will this improve my grades?
We cannot promise a grade, and you should be wary of any service that does. Marks depend on your legal understanding, your argument and how your marker applies the criteria. What proofreading and OSCOLA checking reliably do is remove avoidable losses: citation errors, unclear sentences and structural problems. Those marks are recoverable, and that is the part we work on.
Should I check my university's proofreading policy first?
Yes, and we encourage it. Most UK universities permit proofreading but set limits on what a third party may change, and some require students to declare that a proofreader was used. Check your academic integrity policy or ask your personal tutor. If your department has specific restrictions, tell us and we will work within them.
Do you check OSCOLA referencing?
Yes, and it is the part of this service law students value most. What does critical analysis actually mean in a law essay?
It means taking a position and defending it, rather than describing the law accurately. In practice: evaluating whether a decision was correct, weighing competing academic views, identifying where doctrine is incoherent, and saying what should follow.
